What's the point of looking back? Here's the BackstageRider Top 11 Things to Look Forward to in 2012 (so far) with a bit of back-looking, I admit, in the form of musicks I did very much enjoy as well as some guesses about what might be awesome next year.

By this time o’ year, every man, woman, blog and hipster dog have put out their Top Whatever Lists for 2011.

This year was good for music, sure, but there wasn’t a ton that blew me away to the point of drooling obsession. There were drool-worthy MOMENTS (meeting Matt Berninger of the National for a brief, shining second being one, crossing the border into Canada on the Dinosaur Jr. tourbus with Henry Rollins, being another, doing an exclusive photoshoot and meeting Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer for a third), but not a lot changed my life.

Still, let’s hear it for the really, really most excellent albums released this year, and the ones I played the most:

Wye Oak – Civilian

WU LYF – Go Tell Fire to the Mountain

Austra - Feel it Break

Duran Duran - All You Need is Now

Girls – Father - Son, Holy Ghost

Mike Doughty – Yes and Also Yes

Pack AD - Unpersons

The Antlers - Burst Apart

Yuck - Yuck

Baxter Dury – Happy Soup

…but that’s getting rather list-like, innit? There were also some lovely chilled offerings from Dan Mangan, Richard Buckner, Kate Bush, Kurt Vile , Thurston Moore, Wire, Bon Iver, M83, Beirut and on and on. Lovely albums, yes. Mind-blowing? No.

So I’ve decided to look ahead. Be positive. Future-thinking. Buck the trend, etc etc.

Here’s the Top 11 things I’m looking forward to in 2012, yo:

WEEZER CRUISE – I will be drunk on a boat for a week in January cruising from Miami to Cozumel with Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, The Antlers, Nervous Wreckords, Yuck, Wavves, Gene Ween and, yeah, Rivers Cuomo et al on the Weezer Cruise. Even Andy Stack from Wye Oak will be joining us on board for fun. How can this not be absurdly awesome? Note that I will also have the mother of all Weezer prize packs to give away in January. Stay tuned.

THE ELDERS OF BRITPOP RETURNETH – Apparently Blur will be meeting up over the hols to decide whether Alex can leave his cheese farm long enough for the guys to make some new music. Hmmm. Add to that, the car-crash?/amazing? news that the Stone Roses have reunited for a tour and new album (this was one of my fave columns written this past year). PLUS possibly/definitely more car-crash from Shaun William Ryder’s Happy Mondays reunion or the La’s playing New York’s Sound City? Let’s see how this all turns out, shall we? I’ll be pulling up a chair to watch.

GENTLEMEN, RE-START YOUR ENGINES– please dear gods, let this one stick. The Afghan Whigs mighta broken up 10 years ago, but announced in early December that they will be playing ATP festivals in New Jersey and England in 2012. Praying for news of a complete tour that comes close to where I live. I’d really like to hear ANYTHING off of Gentlemen come out of singer Greg Dulli’s mouth again. And new music? Uh, fuh yeah.

BOLDLY GOING TO GIGS I’VE NEVER GONE TO BEFORE – tons of bands touring next year that I’ve never seen live: Kasabian, Gotye, Bombay Bicycle Club, folks tell me I should like Fanfarlo, and more. Hell, I’ve never seen the Kaiser Chiefs, which is weird. Look forward to lots of “Huh…they were better/worse than I expected” posts.

LIKE A MONKEY WITH A MINIATURE CYMBAL- My favourite show of almost all time happened back in 2008, and was Hot Chip. The band itself even rated Vancouver’s gig as the best of their entire North American tour. But they’ve not been back and the five-piece’s now in total side-project mode. I’d really like to have Hot Chip back, please. At least live? Maybe this year? Al from Hot Chip told me a few months ago over Twitter that the band were aching to tour again and hadn’t forgotten the Vancouver show.

GIMME MORE INDIE ROCK… – A new Sebadoh record? YUP. Their last album happened in 1999, but after a series of pretty rad “Bakesale/Harmacy Remembering Time” tours last year, the addition of an amazing new drummer Bob D’Amico, and a new lease on indie rock life, it looks like the band that never really broke up is gearing up to put together some new music in 2012 as part of a fan-funded project. Expect Jason, Bob and Lou to record in March with hopefully an autumn release and all sorts of goodies if you help them make it a reality. I’m pleased to announce, too, that I’ll be involved this project, too…which may be unsurprising to anyone who reads BSR regularly and saw the umpteen posts about how I went on tour this past year with Sebadoh in the US and Germany.

…AND MORE GOTH: Rumour has it that when The Cure recorded their 13th album 4:13 Dream (which was wayyy more poppier than any of us’d like), they also recorded a batch of suitably gloomy stuff for a possible “Dark Album”. And rumour ALSO has it that that album may show its birdsnest-hair-head in 2012. I will weep tears mixed with gothy black eyeliner if not.

BRONZE SLIPPY – electro duo Underworld were named musical directors of the London 2012 Olympic Games’ Opening Ceremonies, and are teaming up up with Slumdog Millionaire/Trainspotting director Danny Boyle to direct this big insanity, happening on July 27th. I reckon this could be interesting, ‘cos there’ll be lots of cool folks involved. Am I curious? HELL YES. I mean, Vancouver had Bryan Adams. SO TOP THAT, KARL HYDE!

RECORDS BEING SET STRAIGHT - Mike Doughty has spent the last, oooh, millions of years dissing his former band Soul Coughing and talking openly and honestly about life as a drug addict in the 90s. His very first book (not including Slanky, his poetry collection) is a memoir called The Book Of Drugs, and will reach deeply into how Soul Coughing came together, then fell apart and also look at the anatomy of a musician addict. Doughty’s a superb writer and I’ve got an advance copy going beside my bed. It’s brilliant, honest and really bolshy. Pre-order The Book of Drugs now, it’s out on Jan. 10.

BORN TO DIE OF OVEREXPOSURE? – Fascinated by how mainstream media glommed on to quirky Florence and the Machine a year or two ago, I’mma gonna be watching as the squeaky and annoying wheels of MAJOR MARKETING continue to spin around Lizzy Grant, aka Lana Del Rey. I’m not really buying it – though clearly everyone wants us to. Lizzy will be playing SNL before her first album comes out and she’s got mega bucks invested in her. I’m guessing they wanna fill the void of Lady Gaga/Crooner Girl hybrids? Should be fascinating to watch this THING explode.

THE BEST ROCKHANDS ARE YET TO COME – I’ve got my fingers in so many pies that I feel like a really sticky octopus. There might be some festivals, too (though I’m broke), some partnerships with the coolest of the West Coast music scene, and there will DEFINITELY be a lot of surprises coming up on BackstageRider. One thing I can guarantee that I will look forward to next year: knowing that you’re reading me, tweeting me, FB’ing me, Google+’ing me, and supporting this one-woman show. So keep talking to me, okay? And in the meantime, seriously, why aren’t you on the Rockhands Gallery? Send in your pics of you and friends throwin’ the horns for our gallery now.

Have yerself a merry little holiday and a groovy 2012. Rock on! \m/

Diamond Rings talks guilty pleasures, his ideal collaborators, what he'd like on his backstagerider, and oh, answers 8 more questions. Here is the first-ever, on-camera BackstageRider Top 11 Questions With...Diamond Rings. Includes moccasins.

Diamond Rings is my first, my last, my everything.

Just kidding.

But he is my first, in a way. And while not my last, he is also my 200th (post). And because he’s so godsdamned beautiful inside and out, I’m gonna also say he’s my everything… for at least this week.

John Gregory O’Regan – lately of SPIN magazine style issue fame – was the subject of my first-ever bespoke photo shoot, and last week, left his soundcheck opening for Twin Shadow, donned a Vancouver Grizzlies cap and came to hang out with me on the roof of the city’s Biltmore Cabaret for BackstageRider’s first-ever video interview.

In it, John O answers my Top 11 Questions (Remember, kids! Our questions go right to 11!) and discusses Kylie, his guilty pleasures, ball caps and how he’s so thankful to be doing what he’s doing (making awesome music, flailing around like a dork on stage, channeling Ziggy in a Canadian Tuxedo and making the boys AND girls swoon.)

You won’t see me on camera because I was not as pretty as he was, but HE is all kinds of adorable here. Enjoy:

After the cameras stopped rolling, we chatted a bit more about the new album, which will – OH MY GODS SUCH COOL NEWS KERMIT THE FROG-STYLE WAVING HANDS AND YELLING! – be produced by Björk and Austra knob-twiddler/producer/electrical wizard Damian Taylor. And he’s excited by Damian’s involvement. “They’re my songs,” he said laughing, “but he’s got all the great gadgets.” After this tour, he’ll hunker down for a few weeks to work on it in earnest in Toronto. Of the two songs – the keyboardy “All the Time” and the guitary “Runaway Love – he showed off in Vancouver, “Runaway Love”’s definitely got the grittier lipstick-smeared rock edge. Oh and did I mention that one of his B-sides covers is going to be a cover of Teenage Fanclub’s “Mellow Doubt”? No? “Yeah,” says John, “My roomate Colin chooses all my covers for me.” This is gonna be good, folks. So stay finely, expertly…tuned.

And in the meantime, let’s all imagine a world that includes a video where 6-foot-something-lots Diamond Rings is stood next to the perky pint-sized Kylie Minogue. That’s what I’m doing now. And it’s making me very, very happy.

KYLIE MINOGUE! CALL JOHN O RIGHT NOW! I GOT HIS NUMBER! I CAN SORT YOU OUT! \m/

Vancouver's alt-pop, robot-lovin', future-livin' Sex With Strangers release their third album "Frontier Justice" today, so to celebrate, we asked the band for some hot list action. I present to you, friends, some useful advice: Top 11 Clues Your Girlfriend is a Robot. Oh yes.

SPIN magazine favourites, SXSW chaos-inducers, robot dance pop pirates and bocci-loving friends to the BSR, Sex With Strangers today officially launch their third album Frontier Justice out on label Boutique Empire. It’s a good’un, folks, filled with sounds that will make you bump, grind and want to drink whiskey. It’s dirty dance with some delicious technicolour new wave spunked over it.

Frontier Justice is the conceptual/spiritual/literal follow up to the most awesome Tokyo Steel, and features a rather quite stunning bit o’ front art from the same dude who did the cover of TS – artist Rob Edmonds. Rob’s the same guy, you may not recall, who played the crazy painter in SWS’ last video for “We Want The Fire“. (Speaking of videos, did I mention that YOURS TRULY is in an SWS video? NO? Yes? Check it here.)

And as SWS are obsessed with robots, a futuristic society, urban decay, synthesizers and lynx (though I always argue the superior merits of the tarsier or platypus), it seemed only fitting that we ask singer Hatch Benedict and guitarist Wedge Beavers to provide BackstageRider with a suitable Top 11 to celebrate the launch of the new album. Ladies, gentlemen and robots in between, I present:

Top 11 Clues Your Girlfriend is a Robot…by Sex With Strangers

1) The cold, cold touch of her hand

2) Her parents never existed

3) She’s writes everything in capital letters

4) She knows every word to the Ewok song

5) Your friends are constantly nagging you with, “Hey man, she’s a robot”

6) Your cat has been missing for a week.

7) In your browser history, you stumble upon a Google search for ”Why is my vagina beeping?”

8 ) She celebrates Lorne Greene’s birthday.

9) She’s secretly pissed you never wear the “I’m with robot” t-shirt she bought you.

10) She has an unusual aversion to water and pancake batter.

11) She whispers in your ear “I’m a f-cking robot”.

Shit. I THINK MY GIRLFRIEND IS A ROBOT! I love you, SWS. Bocci soon? You bring the balls, I’ll bring the booze. \m/

Stupid cupid. Valentine's Day should be about gettin' jiggy, not buying roses and chocolates. Here's former Suicide Girl and BackstageRider's favourite alt-porn model Apnea with the Top 11 (bonkers) songs that make her feel, you know, hot.

We here at BackstageRider Central would rather be subjected to copious Bieber than do something cheesy around The Commercial Exploitation of Romance Day.

No, instead, let’s focus on what Valentine’s Day should really be about: dressin’ up, lookin’ sexy and trying to get laid. See? The concept works with or without partner.

So who better to know about all things insanely sexy than former Suicide Girl, alt-porn/fetish/soft-core film model beauty Apnea (aka Amanda Pemberton)?

Besides being in dozens of amazingly styled photo shoots, dirty babydoll Apnea will be starring in (fiance) Chase Lisbon’s new sexy (and I do mean sexy) movie, “We Must Remain The Wildhearted Outsiders”. She and I have chatted a few times late at night on Twitter (she once invited me to come hang with them one Friday night…though we realized it’d be a 30 hour drive, I was tempted and the doe-eyed, tattooed lovely knows how to get things nice and frothy.

So, Apnea – fan of black metal, indie, punk, hip-hop and altrock, what 11 songs do you dig? And we mean, REEEEALLY dig…like in that sexy diggy way. On this, February 14th, what songs make you feel sexy and why?

1. “Sugarwalls” – Aspera – “This song makes me want to cover myself in honey and have sex slaves lick it all off of me”

3. “Small Town” – Among Wolves – “Reminds me of the intimacy of living in isolation”

8. ”Mount Doom” – Urak-Hai – “Does the feeling of ethereal darkness and doom make you feel hot and bothered? Me too.”

Been a while since we've had a Top 11 (because our lists go right to 11). But this one's from Toronto oddball Gregory Pepper/Common Grackle. The BackstageRider loves her some oddballs. So here's an introduction, as well as his Top 11 TV Show Theme Songs.

Who? Gregory Pepper. I SAID: GREGORY PEPPER!

Never heard of him? Yeah, no wonder. He’s from Guelph, Ontario. CANADA. He’s probably really popular and really cool near Toronto, but you know what TORONTO is like.

I used to be from Toronto. So I kinda get it. And I’m going to school you. I like Gregory Pepper. He’s an artist on both sides of the coin. Like, Heads: he draws stuff, Tails: he makes music. You can pick which one you’re interested in – his illustrations or his slack, cleverdumb indie choons – on his website here.

He’s got a thing called Gregory Pepper and His Problems and his latest joint is a thing called Common Grackle. The album’s helmed by Canadian hiphop producer FACTOR , Kool Keith is on there singing about Mondays and beardy rapper Ceschi also lends his stylin’ to a track that I dig on the album called “The Great Depression”. I think the video’s great too, but then I’m depressed a lot. Here it is anyway:

Anyway, I dig Gregory Pepper’s sort of goodBranVan3000 kinda thing, and maybe you might too. So I was all, like, “Gregory Pepper. Will you give me a Top 11?” So he did.

I’m kinda bummed he didn’t include themes to the Great Space Coaster or Fat Albert, but HEY! HEY! HEY! that’s just me. So here’s his:

Gregory Pepper’s Top 11 TV Show Theme Songs

1) Rawhide

In the spirit of rock n' roll randomness and the fact that their reunion dates are (praise all gods) upon us, the BackstageRider pins down Pavement's Bob Nastanovich to talk about his 7-inches. Get your mind out of the gutter..and remember, our lists go right to 11.

March 25, 1994, Toronto.

Pavement played the Palladium, Codeine opened.

There had been an intimate press conference earlier that I’d attended and and so following the gig, I found myself chatting yet again with Stephen West, Bob Nastanovich and Mark Ibold.

“I got stoned before the show,” said Ibold. “I haven’t ever done that. I forgot songs that I knew so well…”

Yeah, I suppose it is easy to forget songs that you know so well. But it is harder to forget your favourite bands.

It’s been about – oh – 10 years or so since I pulled Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain out of its sleeve, soit was time to go back. I went back to Pavement and Slanted and Enchanted and Wowee Zowee and Brighten The Corners, and what do you know? Still bonkers. And I haven’t forgotten the words to “Silence Kit”. Phew.

True, Pavement fans had other things to keep them busy over the years, like Malkmus and the Jicks. (Last last time I ran into him it was 2008 and he having a cigarette through a horrid mustache, outside a venue in Vancouver). But Pavement? Man, they were missed.

So it was with a great big indie rock non-committal and buttoned-down nod that I greeted the news late last year that the American oddballs were reuniting to celebrate their 20th Anniversary and bring the love back to the kids. I lie, I actually think I punched the air and said exclaimed something out-loud like “holy shit, really?”, but nevermind.

Last month, the newly reunited indie kings warmed up in Australia and will be hitting New York’s Central Park SummerStage, Coachella, Pitchfork and Sasquatch festivals in the US, Roskilde in Denmark, All Tomorrow’s Parties in the UK as well as a handful of other tourdates late-spring through to next autumn. Their best of, Quarantine the Past, is out now on Matador Records.

Which makes it high time to get a little nostalgic, throw back to those Gold Soundz and ask a Mr. Pavement- specifically, cheerleading percussionist Bob Nastanovich – to reflect on the things he loves.

And they would be what? Small, round, bits of pressed-vinyl, apparently. You can keep your iTunes vouchers and shove your high-falutin’ downloads where the sun don’t shine because PAVEMENT ARE ALL ABOUT THE LO-FI. Oh yes.

Ergo:

My Top 11 7″ Records by Bob Nastanovich:

The Raincoats- ‘No One’s Little Girl b/w ‘Running Away’ (Sly Stone)

New Order- ‘Ceremony’ b/w ‘In A Lonely Place’

Minutemen -’Paranoid Time’ EP

Repulse Kava- ‘Daddy’s Crowbar’ b/w ‘Judging’

Autoclave- ‘I’ll Take You Down’ b/w ‘Go Far’ & ‘It’s Not Real Life’

Monkey 101- ‘French Feelings’ b/w ‘Now That You Have Left Me’

Stereolab- ‘Harmonium’ b/w ‘Farfisa’

Galaxie 500- ‘Tugboat’ b/w ‘King Of Spain’

The Girls- ‘Chico’s Girl’ b/w The Whyte Boots- ‘Nightmare’

Palace Brothers- ‘Ohio River Boat Song’ b/w ‘Drinking Woman’

Mudhoney- ‘Touch Me I’m Sick’ b/w ‘Sweet Young Thing Ain’t Sweet No More’

“Touch Me I’m Sick”? Galaxie 500’s “Tugboat”? NICE. It IS easy to forget the songs you know so well, so it’s better when somebody cool reminds you of them.

But one here and now question remains: what’s the deal with the reunion, Bob? Why now? And what do you think about it all?

“I totally missed the excitement,” says the nice man. “And with some of the lads in the band having children and other bands, 2010 worked best for everyone in terms of timing. Plus, it’s nice that so many people still care about the band. Thanks!!”

Uh, no, thank you, Bob. We missed you.

Hey Britta Phillips from uber-cool indie scenesters Dean & Britta! Will you be our Valentine? You will? Will you talk sexy at us? You will? *swoon* (And remember, our lists GO RIGHT TO 11!)

Here at BackstageRider Towers, we like sexy things. We like sexy food. We like sexy people. And we definitely like sexy people doing sexy music. Britta Phillips, for instance.

Britta Phillips is sexy because she is one-half of Dean & Britta - New York’s effortlessly chic loungey indie popsters – and was formerly one-fourth of Luna, New York’s effortlessly chic, loungey indie popsters. She is also sexy because she was actually the singing voice of Jem and the Holograms and let’s face it, those earrings were AMAZING.

Britta is also sexy becase she and blue-eyed crooner husband Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna) were commissioned to write the music to accompany ”The 13 Most Beautiful: Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests”, and they also did the soundtrack to The Squid & The Whale AND they also run their own label, Double Feature Records. And she is also sexy in knee-high boots.

But this is not nearly as important as the fact that Britta is sexy because she’s got a lovely purr - innocent but also sneaky – which makes anything she sings on, well, you know…

My history with Dean goes back to 1992 but I’ll save those stories for another day. We’re here to bring sexy back. And so, I asked the lovely Britta to talk dirty to us about the things she rather quite fancied over the past year. Take note, chaps, there are two things you can sort immediately. Oh and she also likes sausage, apparently.

Top 11 Things I Think Are Sexy – by Britta Phillips

1. Guys wearing tight trousers again. Finally!

2. The band, Paper Cuts (especially the sound of the bass guitar… sigh…)

3. Performing a Velvet Underground song beneath a projection of Lou Reed while he was in the audience.

4. Jane Holzer brushing her teeth. Seriously. (from the “13 Most Beautiful… songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests” DVD)

5. Guys that don’t sing in a quivering whisper.

6. Sam Worthington.

7. Matt & Lee’s backstage dance before every single Warhol Performance. (Matt Sumrow plays guitar & keys, Lee Wall plays drums)

8. Acting in a Philly Cream cheese commercial. I was paid to flirt, basically.

9. Recording vocals on MGMT’s new album (the song is called “It’s Working”)

10. Currywurst joint opening across the street.

11. Being in Spain… anywhere in Spain…

Have an exceedingly sexy day, folks. \m/

Our Top 10 lists go right to 11. Here are some crucial things that London, England's altrockers White Lies love about Canada and yes, it includes South Park.

Youngsters Harry McVeigh (mighty voice), Charles Cave (mighty lyricist) and Jack Lawrence-Brown (mighty social) made friends and influenced people.

One of the stops was in Vancouver at the now-defunct Richards on Richards, where I interviewed the overly earnest Charles Cave and then sent the band off to one of my fave Vancouver diners, The Templeton where Jack and Charles later told me they’d utterly stuffed themselves and could barely stand up straight.

The BackstageRider caught up with the lads just after the holidays and asked them for a list…

….because in rock, when you’re on ten on your guitar, where can you go from there? Where? OUR LIST GOES TO ELEVEN.

I love McVeigh’s Irish Pub too – I remember wiling away hours with Chris Hooper from the Grapes of Wrath there in the very early 90s, before smuggling him past fans at the backstage door of Massey Hall. Good times.

White Lies begin a tour of Russia and Europe in February if you happen to be in either. Check out their wunnerful, moody nu-wave on Myspace.
Singer-songwriter, wry writer, poet, photographer, prodigious blogger, and (I know he hates when we bring this up but I know he likes parentheses ‘cos his new album is full of them) former lead singer of 90s alt-spunk band Soul Coughing, Mike Doughty is truly a one-of-these-kids-is-doing-his-own-thing sort of cool. Without being, yunno, coooooool.

Because cool, as we know it, folks, implies effort. In fact, it doesn’t imply but expects the following: ironic t-shirts, jeans from Japan that you can’t ever wash though the ink dyes your white Vans blue, a predilection for “urban vinyl” toys, being able to say “I had a seriously peaty scotch at Diamond”, and a record collection that includes singles by mumbly teenagers from Sarf London. (Looking at you The XX.)

Awwww, yeah.

That ain’t Doughty.

And yet….

…what makes Doughty cool (besides his love for both open and closed brackets and his making of witty and catchy “small rock” choons) is that he is, well, no bullshit. Mike Doughty is just an honest guy making music. Writing. Doing Stuff.

He’s honest about himself, honest in his songs, honest when talking ABOUT his songs, honest about getting clean, being on crazy pills, breaking-up/dating/being single/fucking a republican, about what he thinks about his time in Soul Coughing (he’d rather dig out his own liver with a spork before reforming) and honest in every question he answers during his Question Jar live gig. (What’s a Question Jar? Put your questions in a jar! He’ll answer them! Even the ones about cheese or robots! Especially the ones about cheese and robots!) Read my review of his Question Jar show in Van, here.

So it being the season, and Doughty being the No BS guy, the Backstage Rider had to ask:

Mike Doughty, honestly, what are your New Year’s Resolutions?

My New Year’s Resolutions by Mike Doughty

1. Be groovy
2. Eat my greens
3. Observe the first law of rocking, which is: Don’t stop rocking.
4. Avoid the key of D
5. Limit coffee consumption to sub-cocaine levels
6. Get really really fat
7. Eschew arson
8. Listen to more Tigrinya folk music
9. Wear fisherman’s waders
10. Burn guitars for fuel

See? No BS. . Except maybe about the waders…and the getting fat… and…uh, I’m not certain. Why don’t you ask him? I’m sure he’ll answer honestly.\m/

Mike Doughty’s latest album is “Sad Man, Happy Man” and out now on ATO Records and orderable through all fine establishments. He’s also heading out on tour with his guitar, the incomparable Andrew ‘Scrap’ Livingstone on cello and the Question Jar. So check the dates and go. Come armed with any question except “What is the unsingable name?”.
